‘Very surprised’: Jose Enrique can’t believe what player who Klopp sold for Liverpool is about to do

Jose Enrique is shocked at the news that former Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius is about to sign for Newcastle United.

As per Sky Sports, Karius is in ‘advanced talks’ to sign for the Magpies. But taking to Twitter Enrique, who played for both Liverpool and Newcastle, expressed his surprise at the move.

Very surprise[d] about this one for Newcastle,” wrote the Spaniard.

It’s a decent move for Karius after leaving Liverpool at the end of last season. Having failed to secure himself a club during the summer window, he’s set to be back in the Premier League once again.

Karius fails to land a starting role

Although not a bad move for Karius, he’ll have preferred to join a club as first-choice ‘keeper. That isn’t going to happen at Newcastle.

They’ve have just signed an excellent goalie in Nick Pope. As a result of that, Karius looks to be merely an emergency understudy to injured back-up ‘keeper Karl Darlow.

He may get some opportunities in the domestic cups, depending on how long Darlow is out for. But, for now at least, he’ll be resigned to the bench.

Even that will be relatively unfamiliar territory for Karius at this stage. The German spent the whole of last season at Liverpool without ever getting close to a matchday squad.

Jurgen Klopp had clearly lost faith in the player to such an extent, that he’d rather put youngsters like Harvey Davies on the bench in the Premier League.

In the end, it was a sorry end to a promising Liverpool career. After the nightmare of the Champions League final in Kyiv though, Karius was simply never the same.

All the best to him in his new Premier League adventure. Football is a funny old game, and you just never know, maybe he’ll end up getting an unexpected opportunity to impress at Newcastle.
