REPORT: TODD BOEHLY NOW WANTS TO SIGN £44M LIVERPOOL TARGET FOR CHELSEA

According to Sport, Chelsea have now joined Liverpool in the race to sign Benfica maestro Enzo Fernandez.

CHELSEA WANT LIVERPOOL TARGET

Well, the Blues and the Reds could have signed the Argentina international for just €10m (£8m) back in the summer, although they twiddled their thumbs as Benfica pounced on the opportunity.

Now, the Spanish news outlet believe Fernandez is worth €50m (£44m).

The South American has been a revelation for Benfica since his bargain switch from River Plate, scoring three goals in his first three appearances for the Portuguese giants.

Sport add that Benfica are already rubbing their hands ahead of a future sale, as they expect to receive a significant sum for the 21-year-old.

The Portuguese giants are superb when it comes to finding rough diamonds, polishing them up before receiving millions from Premier League sides for their signature.

Benfica did exactly that when selling Darwin Nunez to Liverpool for £85m back in June, while they also received a huge £65m from Manchester City for Ruben Dias in September 2020.

LIVERPOOL SHOULD BID FOR CHELSEA TARGET IN JANUARY

In our view, Liverpool need to get bidding before more clubs take notice of Fernandez.

At one point, only Liverpool and Wolves were looking at the Argentine as far as media reports went, but now Chelsea – and also Barcelona – have joined the race as Todd Boehly aims to spend his millions in west London.

As we saw in the aforementioned £85m deal for Nunez, it doesn’t take long for a promising player in Portuguese football to become a multi-million pound superstar.

As a result, Liverpool cannot afford to wait.

Sport claim that Fernandez is currently worth £44m – if that is the case, an offer needs to go in, as that sum could even double in 12 months if the Benfica No.13 continues at his current trajectory.

Keep an eye on this situation going into 2023, as Europe’s elite look set to fight it out for Fernandez.
