Report: Senior sources at Liverpool have responded to rumours about £32m player’s future

Arthur’s Liverpool future was said to be in doubt recently and senior sources have reportedly responded to the rumours. The Brazilian joined Liverpool at the transfer deadline.

This comes from the Athletic. They say senior sources at Liverpool have dismissed claims that Arthur Melo could already be on his way out of Anfield.

Reports in Italy suggested that the Brazilian had failed to impress. He arrived as a deadline-day signing from Juventus – a one-year loan that includes a £32m option to buy him permanently. The risk was always that Arthur wasn’t a great fit and that Juventus had a good reason to loan him out.

The fact that Jurgen Klopp hasn’t used the player often also hinted that he wasn’t what Liverpool wanted. That’s apparently untrue, however – the Reds always knew what they were getting.

Arthur’s Liverpool future

The Athletic’s report outlines why we haven’t seen much of Arthur. He started his pre-season one month later than Liverpool, putting him massively behind on fitness. An injury, coupled with Max Allegri not using him, further pushed back his readiness.

Liverpool, then, wouldn’t have expected Arthur to deliver much before the international break. All efforts turn to him using this break to get up to speed – and he’s doing just that.

Arthur has featured for the Under 21s twice over the last week. He’s also hired his own professionals to help him daily in efforts to up his fitness, per The Times. He hopes this will impress Klopp and co. – and it almost certainly will.
Under 21s boss Barry Lewtas is impressed and openly talked up the player this week. Arthur’s extra efforts will stand him in good stead once club football returns in October.
And we’ll expect to see more of the player. Arthur has a huge six weeks to make an impact before the World Cup, at which point Liverpool will start to think about the January transfer window.
While it no longer seems as though the Reds will give up on Arthur that month, he’ll be keen to prove they don’t need to sign anyone new.
