Liverpool scouts have been blown away by the progress of Anderlecht defender Zeno Debast.
That’s according to 90min, who claim that the Reds talent spotters are ‘ hugely impressed’ by the 18-year-old. As a result, Liverpool are reportedly keeping ‘a close eye’ on Debast with a view to a future move.
So far, that is said to have resulted in ‘excellent’ scouting reports on the youngster. Debast has reportedly been watched on ‘a number of occasions’ so far this season, with Liverpool coming away excited by his talent.
The Reds aren’t alone in their interest, though. 90min claim that if they want to take their admiration of Debast further, then they’ll have to do battle with Borussia Dortmund.
Debast bursts into the spotlight
Debast may not be a hugely familiar name right now. But that could soon be about to change.
The teenager broke into the Anderlecht first team last season under the tutelage of legendary centre-back Vincent Kompany.
Five First Division appearances gave a hint of the talent that Debast possesses. The defender has kicked on almightily this season, though.
He has started all 14 of Anderlecht’s games across all competitions this season. As a result, Debast is now one of the first names on the Belgian giants’ team sheet.
This has led to international recognition for the side currently ranked as the second best in the world. Debast started both of his country’s Nations League games in September.
Belgium may not be quite as star-studded as they once were. But it’s still no mean feat to be rubbing shoulders with the likes of Kevin De Bruyne and Eden Hazard aged just eighteen.
With aging defenders like Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld still in Roberto Martinez’s squad, there’s room for some young blood.
This would appear to give Debast a good chance of featuring at the World Cup this winter. If he can take to the stage in Qatar, Liverpool may need to ramp their interest up quickly before word of his talent spreads too much further.
