Report: Liverpool fighting to sign ‘special’ £53m attacker who was voted as better than Haaland last season

Liverpool are still fighting to sign RB Leipzig attacker Christopher Nkunku for next season.

That’s according to Fussball Transfers, who claim that Liverpool are ‘far from giving up’ their hopes of signing the Frenchman.

It’s claimed that, along with Real Madrid, the Reds are hoping to derail Chelsea’s bids to bring Nkunku to Stamford Bridge. However, both Liverpool and Madrid reportedly remain behind Chelsea in the running.

The Blues are still reported to be in ‘pole position’ to land the 24-year-old. Nkunku has a release clause which means he’ll be available for around £53m next summer.Liverpool are still fighting

Liverpool not giving up on Nkunku

As reported by Bild and confirmed by Fabrizio Romano on Twitter, Nkunku has indeed had a medical at Chelsea.

That would look to massively put the squeeze on any club with designs on snaring the player for themselves.

Romano does report that the deal isn’t quite done yet. But to get to such an advanced stage with the player, and with a release clause in effect, completion surely can’t be far away.

As a result, Liverpool may well have to accept defeat in this particular battle.Liverpool are still fighting

That would be a shame, of course, because Nkunku looks to be an excellent player. The France international really blossomed last year, scoring a remarkable 36 goals and grabbing 17 assists for Leipzig.

His form led to him being named the Bundesliga Player of the Year ahead of names such as Erling Haaland and Robert Lewandowski.

It looks like he’ll do battle with Haaland once again next season as he heads to the Premier League. Right now, it doesn’t look as though that will be with Liverpool.

But if this report is to be believed, the Reds aren’t done quite yet. They’ll perhaps have to pull something special out of the bag at this late stage, but hope is not quite lost that Nkunku could end up at Anfield in 2023.
