REPORT: ‘Incredible’ Liverpool player could now miss Napoli game, will be assessed before the match

Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones could miss the Napoli game tomorrow after suffering an injury set-back.

Jones had just returned from a four week lay-off to feature on the bench against Newcastle United last Wednesday. But according to The Athletic, the 21-year-old is now a doubt once again.

They claim that Jones will be ‘assessed’ by Liverpool staff ahead of the game. Despite his return against Newcastle, the England U21 star missed Saturday’s draw with Everton.

There are no details included of the nature of Jones’ latest knock. But with Jordan Henderson confirmed to be set for a three-week period out, Liverpool could do without losing more midfielders.

Fabio Carvalho is also claimed to be a ‘doubt’ to make his Champions League debut. Meanwhile, Jurgen Klopp could reportedly hand Arthur Melo his Liverpool debut in Naples.

More frustration for Jones

This is really disappointing news for both Liverpool and Jones himself. The youngster has so far had a massively frustrating season. The Newcastle game has been his only matchday involvement since the Community Shield at the end of July.

Although he didn’t manage to get off the bench last Wednesday, he must have felt he’d turned a corner after training all week.

It could still be the case that he has done just that. But this latest bit of news doesn’t look like a positive step in that regard.

At a time when Liverpool’s midfield is very much subject to change, Jones would have an opportunity to shine. Instead, his return to fitness would seem likely to now coincide with Thiago Alcantara’s, and perhaps even Henderson’s too.
