Report: Chelsea have now joined the race for ‘unbelievable’ Liverpool target, he’s out of contract in 2023

Chelsea have now joined the race for Douglas Luiz, according to reports. Liverpool are also said to be in the mix.

This comes from the Birmingham Mail. They claim that Chelsea now have interest in Aston Villa’s Douglas Luiz. The Blues have a couple of midfielders out of contract in 2023 – Jorginho and N’Golo Kane – and Luiz could be an easy replacement.

Luiz, after all, is also out of contract next year. That’s part of the reason there was a push from Arsenal to sign him at the transfer deadline. As per the article, though, Villa stuck to their £40m asking price and didn’t budge. That’s despite the fact he could leave for free after the season.

It sounds as though Chelsea, and presumably Arsenal, will try to strike a cut-price deal in January, however. It’ll be the last time Villa can get any fee unless Luiz renews his contract. That doesn’t seem very likely.

Then there’s Liverpool. Sky Sports claimed at the transfer deadline that the Reds also held an interest in Luiz. Calciomercato, reporting on AC Milan wanting the player, believe that interest remains.

So while it’s not easy to predict where Luiz is going, it certainly seems like he’ll have his pick of clubs.

Chelsea joins Douglas Luiz race

We’ve written before on what Luiz could bring to Liverpool if they won this race. He’s fairly ‘average’ at everything in midfield – but that’s not a bad thing.

In fact, Luiz is the kind of midfielder that Jurgen Klopp has found plenty of success with. Teams can rely on him to defend, to pass the ball and to get forward. There’s no real weakness in his game and we’d expect Liverpool to improve him.

The only real downside is that Luiz might not be very cheap anymore. If Villa do wish to sell in the winter, competition is going to drive his price quite high even with just six months on his contract. Similarly, the player is in line for a massive contract next summer if he’s available for free.

Would that put Liverpool off? Potentially. They’ve got plenty to think about when it comes to restructuring their midfield. Whether or not Luiz fits into those plans remains to be seen.
