Report: Liverpool would love to sign £26m man, but Real Madrid have now set their sights on him too

Real Madrid have joined Liverpool in the race to sign Flamengo midfielder Joao Gomes. That’s according to Diario AS, who claim that Madrid have now ‘set their sights’ on bringing the 21-year-old to Spain. Liverpool, for their part, are said to ‘love’ Gomes, while Manchester United are also big fans.

But Real reportedly have ‘an advantage’ over the two English teams. What this is exactly isn’t specified, but Los Blancos are said to be looking at Gomes as their ‘new Casemiro.’

Flamengo recently tied the youngster down to a new contract until 2027. However, he will reportedly be available on the market for around £26m.

Liverpool go head-to-head with Madrid yet again

Real Madrid being interested in a Liverpool midfield target will bring about a certain sense of Deja Vu for fans.

The Reds already lost out to the European Champions on summer target Aurelien Tchouameni. As the Frenchman has started life pretty well in La Liga, that one still stings a bit.

If that wasn’t enough, Real are also said to be one of the main competitors for Liverpool’s top target for next summer, Jude Bellingham.

Add to that the memory of being beaten by Carlo Ancelotti’s side in the Champions League final in May, and Liverpool could really do with a win in this battle.Real Madrid have joined Liverpool

Whether Gomes will be that win remains to be seen. It isn’t really in Liverpool’s handbook to sign player’s straight from South America. But having missed out on the likes of Vinicius Junior in the past, perhaps it’s time to change that strategy.

In that respect, Gomes would be as good a player as any to roll the dice on. At twenty-one, he already looks like a pretty complete midfielder and Liverpool could do with a player in his mould.

£26m also doesn’t sound entirely unreasonable for a young man with a potentially very high ceiling.

Unfortunately for the Reds, once Madrid come in for these South American youngsters, it tends to be game over. Let’s wait and see how this pans out.
