Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp hasn’t ruled out the possibility of becoming the German national team manager in the future.
Klopp had been linked with the position after Germany’s dreadful World Cup campaign this year. But with the Liverpool manager going nowhere, Hansi Flick kept hold of his job.
Now, speaking to Bild, Klopp has admitted that it isn’t out of the question that he’ll take the role at some point.
“It’s not completely out of the question that I’ll be the national coach at some point. But it has to fit. And so far it hasn’t. And if I end the contract in Liverpool, then nothing will definitely be done for a year,” he said.
The next step for Jurgen
Far from being an admission of unhappiness at Liverpool, this would feel like the next logical step for Klopp.
But beyond that, it’s tricky to see his next move. Klopp will be fifty-nine by the time his current deal expires. Not old by any stretch, but he has previously spoken about not wanting to continue in management later in life.
So, a less hands-on job would surely appeal to him, then. Besides, after being so synonymous with Liverpool for what will then be eleven years, where could he go?
Klopp loves a project and, pushing sixty, he may not feel he has the energy to commit to another long-term one.
As a result, the national job feels like an ideal scenario. For Liverpool fans, it would be pretty heart-breaking to see Jurgen take on another club job after his stint at Anfield. Having him take over his country’s team would be far less so.
It would also be great to see him have a go at lifting the World Cup. Should he manage that, his legacy as one of the greats of the sport will only be enhanced further.
There’s plenty to focus on at Anfield for the time being, as Klopp looks to build another great side. But when all is said and done at Liverpool, we can see this one happening.
