Moved to take’: Agent claims Liverpool did try to sign 22-year-old who was brilliant against them in 2020

The agent of Torino centre-back Perr Schuurs has claimed that Liverpool tried to sign his client in the past.

In an interview with Tuttosport, George Gardi admitted that he was shocked that Schuurs hadn’t attracted a higher calibre club after leaving Ajax this summer.

The first time the director expressed Torino’s desire to take Perr, it seems to me that we were facing something unthinkable to be realized. Over time, clubs of the calibre of Tottenham, Liverpool or PSG had moved to take the player,” he said.

“The operation, as I told you, was long, but fair and in some passages even pleasant. In addition to Liverpool, Tottenham, PSG and three Italian clubs also wanted Schuurs.

“However, having taken a path, we went on to follow it without delay, even with a strong conviction. Thanks to Torino, I am sure Schuurs can become a pillar of the Dutch national team. Now he is part of the tour, but the ambition is to be a protagonist.”Liverpool tried to sign

Liverpool interest in Schurrs no surprise

It isn’t a surprise to hear that Liverpool were sounding Schuurs representatives out over a possible move.

Back in 2020, the 22-year-old was absolutely excellent against the Reds in the Champions League Group Stage. Ajax may have lost 1-0 home and away to Liverpool, but Schuurs really stood out.

As Jurgen Klopp was facing a defensive crisis at that time, it felt almost inevitable that Liverpool would move for the Dutchman.

In the end, perhaps they did. But for whatever reason, the Reds obviously opted against pushing further. As it turned out, so did the other clubs Gardi mentions, all of whom are playing Champions League football this season.Liverpool tried to sign

With respect to Torino, perhaps there’s a reason Schuurs has had to make a slight step down this summer.

He fell out of favour with Erik ten Hag towards the end of his time at Ajax last season. As a result of that, maybe interest from the top clubs wasn’t as forthcoming as it once had been this summer.

Still, Schuurs is clearly a talent. He’s replacing another former Liverpool target – Gleison Bremer – in Turin. They’re pretty big shoes to fill.

If he can fill them sufficiently, he’s still young enough for a club such as Liverpool to come in for him somewhere down the line.
