Welcome to our LIVE coverage of Liverpool’s clash against Newcastle United.
The Reds take on Newcastle at Anfield in their next Premier League clash of the season, looking to follow on from their 9-0 win over Bournemouth at the weekend.
Jurgen Klopp could welcome some of his squad back into the fold today, with Joel Matip, Curtis Jones and Calvin Ramsay all recently returning to training, but could still be short of match fitness.
Naby Keita, Diogo Jota, Thiago Alcantara, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Ibrahima Konate are all still sidelined and will not be involved tonight.
This is Liverpool’s first midweek league match of the campaign, and they will be keen to add to the five points they have amassed so far from their previous four fixtures.
Newcastle were held to a 1-1 draw with Wolves at the weekend, and there are fitness doubts over the likes of Callum Wilson, Bruno Guimaraes and Allan Saint-Maximin.
Full time and Liverpool win 2-1!
It’s full time and what a huge win for Liverpool! The Reds took the lead in the 97th minute through Carvalho. The 20-year-old smashed the ball in off the underside of the bar as Anfield went crazy! What a finish!
Sums it up
And that pretty much sums it up for Liverpool tonight as the ball drops kindly for Joe Gomez on the edge of the box and the centre half smashes it high into the Anfield Road end. Probably not the best decision to match.
Every Newcastle player
Nick Pope catches the ball and every Newcastle player suddenly has cramps
Five minutes added on
Liverpool have three minutes of the five added on to try and take all three points from this game.
Harvey Elliott has comfortably been Liverpool’s best player so far this season and perhaps that is one of the big problems for the Reds.
The likes of Mo Salah have not been to their usual standard and it shows in Liverpool’s performances.
The ball dribbles kindly for Fabinho on the edge of the box, but he smashed it over the bar once again. Liverpool not creating many good chances .
Free kick for Newcastle
Free kick for the away side was sent into the Liverpool box, it was glanced on at the near post, but the offside flag was up and Alisson gets the action underwater.
Fabinho blazes over
Wasteful from Fabinho as Tsimikas’ free kick falls to the Brazilian in the box but he smashes it into the Anfield Road crowd. Groans from the Liverpool fans are heard.
Salah plays the ball in for Diaz and his first time shot is half blocked by Trippier and it falls kindly into Pope’s hands. That was a chance.
Liverpool are pushing to take the lead
Firmino gets his head on a corner, but the box is congested and his header is blocked. The forward then shows how good his defending is by tracking back and helping his defence out.
15 minutes to go…
15 minutes left at Anfield as Liverpool and Newcastle are still locked in a 1-1 draw. This match could go either way yet.
Change at full-back
Liverpool’s full-backs are so key to the way they play and both Alexander-Arnold and Robertson are not firing at the moment. James Milner is now at right-back as Tsimikas occupies the left-back roles.
Substitutes for Liverpool
Tsimikas and Milner come on for Robertson and Henderson. Carvalho has come on also for Alexander-Arnold. Proves how poor the right-back has been given Liverpool need a goal and he is usually the main source of creativity.
Liverpool would love to have Darwin Nunez
This is another game where Liverpool would love to have Darwin Nunez available. The striker would have given the Reds a real focal point tonight and helped them apply the finishing touch as they start to pile on the pressure. The crowd are fully behind the Reds here.
Liverpool are level and it’s a much needed one from Roberto Firmino! A great finish into the bottom corner of Pope’s goal from a Mo Salah pass.
Come on Liverpool!
No shots on goal
Liverpool have had 70% of the ball tonight, but have so failed to record a shot on target.
It’s not good this from Liverpool, a severe lack of creativity from the Reds.
Lack of energy from Liverpool
Liverpool are in real danger of letting another Premier League match pass them by. There’s been a clear lack of energy from those on the field tonight, like we have already seen at times this season. A thumping challenge from Joe Gomez raises the noise inside the place but it’s going to take more than that if the Reds are to turn this around.
Newcastle have the ball in the net
Isak had the ball in the net again, but it’s been flagged for offisde and it was very tight! Worrying for Liverpool is how easy Isak passed three players in red.
Chance for Robertson
Andy Robertson had a chance to equalise withi his right foot but his shot was blocked and Liverpool’s resulting corner came to nothing.
Subs out warming up
On cue from Marcus there, as Jurgen Klopp sends Carvalho, Milner and Tsimikas to warm-up. Meanwhile, the camera pans to the suspended Nunez who is in attendance tonight, and how Liverpool could do with his presence tonight.
Time for Fabio Carvalho?
You’ve got to think a change is coming soon. Liverpool just haven’t got going and have lacked any sort of spark in the middle. Fabio Carvalho has looked bright since joining from Fulham and his creativity is exactly what Liverpool need to find a route back into this game. Meanwhile, Newcastle’s time wasting has continued already.
Trademark ball from Van Dijk plays Diaz in behind but he’s thwarted but a wonderful sliding tackle
Half time ratings
Alisson – 6
Not too many efforts at his goal. No chance with the goal.
Alexander-Arnold – 5
Caught out as the visitors counter-attacked early in the first-half. Left Gomez outnumbered but was subsequently bailed out by Isak’s woeful finish. A questionable back pass early on.
Gomez – 6
Dealt with Isak welll and used his pace accordingly. Still signs of getting back into the swing of things, but growing in confidence with each passing minute.
Van Dijk – 6
Hasn’t been too tested in defence. Was dragged out by Almiron for the goal. Isak took full advantage.
Robertson – 5
Hasn’t seen much of the ball as Liverpool have attacked down their right-hand side through Salah and Elliott. Meanwhile, Newcastle have targetted Alexander-Arnold.
Fabinho – 6
Similar to Henderson, hasn’t been involved anywhere as much as Liverpool have needed. Left a gaping hole for the first goal too.
Struggled so far. Didn’t cover himself in glory for the first goal after a poor touch.
Elliott – 7
Probably Liverpool’s brightest spark so far, how many times has that been said this season? A brilliant piece of play just after the 30-minute mark demonstrated his skill and composure as he took three Newcastle players out of the game with supreme close control.
Salah – 6
Has forged a nice relationship with Elliott on the right. Need to get the ball to him more often, has been isolated at times,
Firmino – 6
Neat in possession and won the ball back at times. Needs more from the midfield when receiving the ball.
Diaz – 7
Similarly to Elliott, Liverpool’s shining light in attack so far. Should have done better after rounding Pope.
Half time whistle blows
Newcastle lead 1-0 at half time and Liverpool have it all to do in the second half if they are to take all three points from this match. Another disappointing display.
