Liverpool ‘tried to sign another midfielder on deadline day’ but he moved to Premier League rival

Liverpool reportedly made an attempt to bring in a different midfielder before the deadline.

The Reds completed the loan signing of Arthur Melo from Juventus on deadline day, with the deal running until the end of the season. The Serie A club claimed in a statement that Liverpool have the option of making the move permanent for €37.5million next summer.

Jurgen Klopp moved to bring in a new midfielder following the injury to Jordan Henderson. The Reds skipper is now on the sidelines, and joins Naby Keita, Thiago Alcantara and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain as being unavailable for selection.

Even though Liverpool brought in Arthur, a report from Italy has claimed another midfielder was of interest. It has been claimed that fellow Juventus player Denis Zakaria was thought to be a target..

According to Gianluca Di Marzio , Liverpool “tried” to bring Zakaria to Anfield before the window closed. However, the player ended up moving to Chelsea in loan instead, with an option to buy in that deal, too.

Other midfielders linked with a move to Liverpool on deadline day included Aston Villa’s Douglas Luiz, Brighton Moises Caicedo and Wolves’ Ruben Neves.

In the end, a loan deal for Arthur was agreed, but the former Barcelona star will not be available for Saturday’s Merseyside derby against Everton due to international clearance.
