Liverpool signing impressive 21-year-old playmaker would trigger change for their ‘special talent’ – RTK View

Liverpool are reportedly thinking about signing Mykhailo Mudryk. The player’s arrival would trigger a change for Fabio Carvalho, though.

Calciomercato reports that Liverpool are in the race for Mykhailo Mudryk. The Ukrainian is one of the most interesting players in the Champions League right now and interest in him looks likely to grow.

Mudryk has two goals and two assists across Shakhtar Donetsk’s opening two games. A goal and two assists helped to tear apart RB Leipzig, while he got a goal in a 1-1 draw with Celtic.

The 21-year-old appears to have a very bright future, in other words. Fabrizio Romano tells CaughtOffside that he’d cost around £40m, too – a steep price but possibly a justifiable one.

Liverpool, though, may need to move some players about to take advantage of Mudryk. He’s shining as a left-sided midfielder or a no.10. We imagine, then, that the left of a midfield three would bring the best out of him.

That’s a role Fabio Carvalho currently looks set to play, however. Perhaps, then, this is a move that could trigger a change for the Portuguese talent.

Liverpool consider signing Mykhailo Mudryk

Carvalho is a ‘special’ player, in the words of Harvey Elliott. He undoubtedly has a role to play in Liverpool’s future – it’s just not entirely clear where it is.

One luxury he does bring is that his skillset is versatile. If Liverpool did bring in a left-sided playmaker, Carvalho could simply move to a different area of the pitch. One we think he could suit very well is as a False 9.Everton FC v Liverpool FC - Premier League

That’s a role Jurgen Klopp has loved with Liverpool. Roberto Firmino plays it to perfection and we’ve seen this season how it still delivers for the team. Even though, in Darwin Nunez, the Reds look likely to move away from it.

But having it there as an option feels essential long-term. Liverpool should always be able to fall back on a False 9, even if Firmino leaves. And with his contract expiring in 2023, that’s a genuine possibility.

Thus perhaps signing a player like Mudryk would trigger a change for Carvalho. He could move into that False 9 role, or at least play it with some regularity. It would get both players in the team and allow Liverpool to stick with their successful 4-3-3.
