LIVERPOOL NEWS: How Mohamed Salah set multiple Champions League records against Rangers on Wednesday night

Mo Salah didn’t just set Champions League record for fastest hattrick tonight, set PL record too.

The Liverpool forward was astonishing.

Liverpool were 3-1 up when Mohamed Salah came on against Rangers with 22 minutes left to play. The match finished 7-1.

Salah was unbelievably good as Liverpool played him as a central striker. The Egyptian ran riot, scoring a six-minute hat-trick as Rangers immediately ran out of ideas about how to cope with him.

That hat-trick is now the fastest in Champions League history. Not bad for a player who is in poor form and worrying people.

But it’s not even the only record Salah broke on the night. He also scored his 36th, 37th and 38th Champions League goals for Liverpool. That makes him the all-time goalscorer in the competition for Premier League clubs, moving past Sergio Aguero and Didier Drogba (36 each).

It was simply astonishing to see. Salah reminded everyone that he’s as ruthless as ever – that hasn’t been the problem in recent weeks. If Liverpool can get him chances, he’ll take them.

So what was different tonight? Well, for starters, Rangers needed to push on a bit to find goals and Salah took advantage. Once he got the first, the Scots collapsed – and he could take advantage of that, too.

But another massive difference was the system. Salah has been stuck out on the right flank for last few weeks, especially in this 4-4-2. Tonight, though, Jurgen Klopp through him on in the centre-forward positions and the no.11 thrived.

Salah was able to find space wherever he could see it, with little need to drop back for passes. He was always in the box, getting touches that he didn’t get against Arsenal at the weekend.

Against the Gunners, he had a sole touch in the box. Against Rangers, he’s scoring three inside the box within six minutes.

That’s good for thought, then. Maybe Salah through the middle is the future here.
