LIVERPOOL HAVE NOW MADE FIRST MOVE TO SIGN ‘COMPLETE’ MIDFIELDER WITH ‘HUGE POTENTIAL’

Liverpool want Florentino Luis and have initiated contact to try and learn about the Benfica midfielder’s situation ahead of the January transfer window.

The Reds are bound to focus on signing a new midfielder or two – maybe even three – during the 2023 transfer windows.

James Milner, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita are all out of contract this summer and could leave for nothing.

Add in that Arthur Melo’s loan spell will end and Liverpool may need to completely revamp their midfield options.

A big signing like Jude Bellingham would be ideal but Liverpool may also need to bring in some depth options too.

LIVERPOOL WANT FLORENTINO LUIS

A surprise link has now emerged in Portugal with newspaper Record claiming that Liverpool are interested in signing Benfica’s Florentino Luis.

It’s suggested that Florentino is on Liverpool’s radar and they have already made their first move towards a deal by establishing contact to try and thrash out a 2023 switch.

That would surely be with Florentino’s representatives at this stage rather than with Benfica but Liverpool have allegedly initiated their interest.

The 23-year-old came up through the Benfica ranks and looked set to become a star after showing huge promise as a kid.

Yet loan spells in the last two seasons with Monaco and Getafe has seen Florentino’s reputation dip.

The Portuguese midfielder has gone back into the Benfica starting lineup this season though and has been impressive as an anchor man.

Liverpool may well see Florentino as cover and competition for Fabinho as a true defensive midfielder.

Florentino does still have some untapped potential at just 23 too, and he surely wouldn’t come with a huge asking price.

Former Benfica coach Joao Tralhao absolutely raved about Florentino in 2020, suggesting to RMC Sport that he has ‘huge potential’.

Tralhao believes that Florentino is a ‘complete player’ and his ability to press and reading of the game, two attributes that may well appeal to Liverpool.

This still seems like a rather sketchy rumour at this stage but with Liverpool no doubt doing their due diligence on a host of midfielders, Florentino may have popped onto the radar.

Benfica only just secured a new deal until 2027 with Florentino so a January move seems very unlikely.

Liverpool do have eyes on the Portuguese market after deals for Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez this year, but we can’t see Florentino making a move to Anfield as things stand.
