Tyler Morton agreed to a new contract with Liverpool on Wednesday. The midfielder, who is currently on loan with Blackburn Rovers, says he’s ‘absolutely buzzing’ to get the deal.
“I’m absolutely buzzing,” he told the official club site. “The little dream is coming true, so I couldn’t be happier.
“I’ve known for a little while and it’s been ongoing, and I couldn’t wait to get it over the line because this is the place I want to be and this is the club I want to be at. I’m absolutely buzzing and I can’t wait for the future.”
And he should be buzzing. This contract positions Morton in Liverpool’s future at a fantastic time – right as first-team places are about to open up. We think the 20-year-old could be the one to replace James Milner’s role.
Tyler Morton at Liverpool
Morton is a player Jurgen Klopp has called ‘incredible’ in the past – so we know Liverpool rate him highly. And while he’s not the big-name addition fans want to boost the midfield, we see a clear role for him.
Liverpool, after all, are set to have a gaping hole in their midfield this summer. James Milner, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita are all out of contract and look like leaving.
The first two are a real problem, too. Liverpool lose two homegrown players there, seriously hampering them in the transfer market. Bringing in homegrown talent would make things much, much easier.
Morton would be exactly that, of course, and we think he’s ideally suited to Milner’s role. What is that role, then?
Milner isn’t first choice in midfield, nor is he second or even third. Jordan Henderson, Thiago and Keita all start ahead of him – Harvey Elliott arguably does, too.
The vice-captain’s role, outside of his leadership, is to be the reliable, high-energy, available option in midfield. He’s the one Klopp can depend on in any given game and while he may not win games on his own, he is a trusted option.
That is exactly what Morton can bring. He’s showing it already as a 20-year-old competing at the top of the Championship. How much would a player that young usually cost to get from a top Championship side? £15m? £20m?
Liverpool have Morton on their books and as a reliable squad option in midfield, he may be perfect. There’s still a long ways to go but this new contract positions him for a future at Anfield – and Milner’s current role.
