Speaking to Amazon Prime after Liverpool vs West Ham United, Jurgen Klopp has been discussing Thiago Alcantara.
The Spanish midfielder was taken off during the game, and many Reds supporters were concerned that the player had picked up yet another injury during the course of the 1-0 win.
Luckily, Thiago isn’t injured, but Klopp says that he did think the player’s fitness was fading during the game, stating that he’d seen Thiago stretching on the pitch, which Klopp interpreted as a warning sign.
KLOPP WORRIED ABOUT THIAGO
The Liverpool gaffer shared his concern about Thiago.
“Thiago stretched once on the pitch which for me is a warning sign. We have to react to everything, so it was clear we had to change him,” Klopp said before giving a further update on Darwin Nunez.
With Darwin, half time, everyone is saying ‘no, it’s fine, it’s fine,’ but when somebody is five minutes on the treatment bed, I’m concerned as well. They are all okay, I think we picked them all at the right moment.”
Klopp would, of course have wanted to keep Thiago on the pitch. After all, he’s one of Liverpool’s very best players, but if he thought there was a risk of injury, the responsible thing to do was to take him off.
This is why strength in depth is so important, if Liverpool didn’t have players ready to come on they would’ve been forced to keep Thiago on and risk an injury, but they were able to call upon a gluttony of talented midfielders on Wednesday, so this situation was able to be dealt with.
Luckily, Thiago didn’t aggravate any problem he could’ve been facing, and he should be fit and ready for this weekend’s game against Nottingham Forest.
