Pundits in the BT Sport studio raved about Jordan Henderson after his performance v Rangers on Tuesday evening. The Liverpool captain shone.
Jordan Henderson lined up in a semi-unusual role at Anfield against Rangers. He played in a flat midfield two, operating alongside Thiago for Liverpool.
This was a departure from the three-man midfield Jurgen Klopp usually opts for. We saw a change against Rangers, however, as the boss moved to a 4-4-2. That put a lot of pressure on Henderson and Thiago – two players hoping to keep things as solid as a three.
As it turned out, Liverpool looked more solid than they have for some time. The four forwards removed any need for either midfielder to push on, allowing them to focus on sitting deep and controlling the middle. Rangers found it incredibly difficult to counter-attack, while Henderson covered Trent Alexander-Arnold perfectly.
This was a wonderfully unselfish display from Henderson and in a lot of ways, him at his best. The performance earned him rave reviews from Michael Owen, Rio Ferdinand and Ally McCoist in the BT Sport studio.

“Henderson, not only is he filling in for players but he’s also, when on the ball, passes likes this [to create a chance for Darwin Nunez], oh my God,” said Michael Owen.
You know what he is guys?” asked McCoist. “He’s just a really intelligent football player.
He can sniff out danger, can sit and plug holes when he needs to. He can get himself forward, he can finish and as we’ve seen on occasions tonight, he’s certainly an excellent passer. A very intelligent player.”
Gets the best out of others as well, unselfish player,” said Owen. “Just the perfect captain, isn’t he
Henderson was certainly fantastic at Anfield and went off early enough that we can expect a start against Arsenal on Sunday. The captain was back to his best and Liverpool looked far more like themselves as a result.?”
