Liverpool U21 coach Barry Lewtas has praised what he’s been seeing from 17-year-old forward Bobby Clark this season.
Clark has already made his debut for the senior team after impressing during pre-season. And speaking to the Liverpool Echo, Lewtas highlighted some of the youngster’s qualities.
He [Clark] seems to bring something new every game. He adds that ability to carry the ball in midfield,” said the coach. When you have someone who can also carry the ball it can add a different dimension to your game.
“There were a few times where he was perhaps kicking himself for not shooting, but he did to help create the second goal. He gives us something different, he’s not like Dominic [Corness] in the way he can control the game. But having different players in midfield is a key component.”
Clark enhancing first team chances
It’s interesting to hear that Clark has adopted something of a midfield role for the U21s this season.
The Newcastle-born prospect saw minutes in pre-season whilst playing across the forward line. But it seems that his father’s abilities as a midfield player may well have rubbed off on him after all.
Dad Lee played almost 200 times in the Premier League in the middle of the pitch. If Clark can get anywhere near that tally, then Liverpool will be on to a winner.
Obviously, it comes at a time when Liverpool are a little low on midfield options. With yesterday’s news that Arthur Melo is facing up to four months on the side lines, the need for midfielders is starker than ever.

Seen through that lens, maybe Lewtas moving Clark into a deeper role is a smart move.
With the teenager already known to Jurgen Klopp and his coaching staff, they could be more likely to throw him into the first team set up.
Clark will probably have to get past several of his young teammates vying for the role first. The likes of Stefan Bajcetic and even Melkamu Frauendorf may be higher up on Klopp’s list.
But keep catching the eye of his coaches, and that feedback is sure to be ran up the flagpole.
