According to reports coming out of Norway, Liverpool’s move for Andreas Schjelderup is set to be turned down by the player.

According to reports coming out of Norway, Liverpool’s move for Andreas Schjelderup is set to be turned down by the player.

TV2 claim that the 18-year-old is ready to reject Liverpool in favour of a move to Benfica. This would reportedly be the second time that the Reds have failed to convince Shjelderup to join them.

But, with the teenager looking to join Benfica, it’s certainly something for Liverpool to keep an eye on.

The Reds are famously big fans of the Portuguese league, scouring the division for talent in recent years. With a player already on their radar now set to shine in Lisbon, a third approach from Liverpool in the years to come seems likely.Liverpool try again for Schjelderup

Not the end of the story for Liverpool

It’s a shame that Liverpool haven’t been able to get a deal for Shjelderup over line. Back in 2020 when Goal report the first approach was made, he was just a 16-year-old with a good deal of promise.

In the intervening two years or so, the Norwegian has become a star for Danish Superligaen side Nordsjaelland. Chief scout Steen Nedergaard has called his performances ‘fantastic’ via fcn.dk.

With 10 goals in 17 games this season, he has turned into a reliable goal scorer in Denmark. With a reported price-tag of around £12m, Schjelderup could have been a nice, cheap option for Liverpool.

Instead, as they often do, it looks likely to be Benfica who will secure one of the continent’s brightest talent.Liverpool try again for Schjelderup

If the Eagles track-record is anything to go by, this will probably see Schjelderup back on the market in a couple of years time.

When that time comes, it would be a surprise not to see Liverpool come back to the table. Having seen success in arrivals from Portugal over the last couple of years, they’ll have no qualms about spending big on a talent from the Primeira Division.

Just how big that price-tag will be is obviously dependent on how well Schjelderup does from here.

Should he have an Enzo Fernandez-esque rise, a transfer may eventually turn out to be beyond Liverpool’s means. Unless that happens though, it looks like a safe bet that this won’t be the last time Jurgen Klopp tries to sign the youngster.
