Director suggests £44m man could now sign a new contract, after claims Liverpool want him

Ismael Bennacer could be about to extend his stay at AC Milan, after claims that Liverpool are keeping an eye on him.

That’s according to journalist Fabrizio Romano on Twitter. Romano runs quotes from Milan director Paolo Maldini that suggest the reported Liverpool target could soon sign a contract extension.

We’re now in talks to extend the contracts of Ismael Bennacer, Pierre Kalulu and Rafa Leao. We want them to stay, it’s also up to the players,” said Maldini.

Bennacer’s current deal is set to expire in 2024.

Bennacer slipping out of Liverpool’s reach

According to Calciomercato web, Liverpool were interested in making a move for Bennacer this summer.

As the Reds searched for the answer to their midfield issues, Bennacer emerged as a potential option. With a reported release clause of around £44m, he would have been a well-priced option.

The Italian outlet actually claimed that Liverpool were ready to offer £35m during the transfer window.

Should Bennacer end up signing a new contract at Milan, it’s likely that this kind of amount would no longer be on the table for Liverpool.Liverpool contract could sign a contractThe Italian outlet actually claimed that Liverpool were ready to offer £35m during the transfer window.

At any rate, it’s reasonable to expect that the 24-year-old’s release clause would be significantly higher than it is now.

As a result, Liverpool’s potential interest would perhaps be no more. The Algerian is a fine player, and maybe even worth more than his current release would suggest.

But regardless, a new contract at an upwardly mobile club like Milan would be a clear signal that he isn’t going anywhere.

There’s of course still a chance that Bennacer doesn’t commit his future to the Italians. If any hitches do occur, Liverpool should be on-hand to throw their hat into the ring.
