Big problem’: Jamie Carragher says Liverpool now need to sign three players who all play in the same position

Jamie Carragher has claimed that Liverpool need three new signings in midfield in order to compete again.

Carragher made the claim whilst in discussion with the Nostalgia Futbolera YouTube channel. Speaking before Liverpool’s game against Manchester City last week, the pundit said Jurgen Klopp’s midfield options are getting too old together.

“I think physical and mentally on the back of last season has been difficult,” he said. “I think the midfield area is a big problem for Liverpool now. They are lacking the real energy and intensity in midfield because of the age of the players. Thiago is 31, Henderson the same, Fabinho is 29. They need new midfield players.

“It will be difficult to get back to where they have been last season, I think it’s very difficult. I think Liverpool need two or three midfield players in the summer and they have to hope they can make the top four and fight for the Champions League.”

Since Carra’s words, Liverpool have picked up two wins from two games in the Premier League. Regardless of those results, the need for signings remains.three new signings

After Naby Keita’s return to training, the only first team midfielder missing is, ironically, Arthur Melo. Arthur was brought in as emergency cover for those out injured, but only played 13 minutes before succumbing to a long-term injury himself.

So, now that Jurgen can pick from a full selection, we’ll see whether his pre-season confidence can be backed up.

The Liverpool boss was initially bullish in his assertions that the squad didn’t need strengthening in the position.

Reeling off the list of options available to him, he questioned the need to add to that. Should they all now stay fit for the full season, Liverpool might just about be okay.

Beyond that though, there has to be a refresh. As Carragher points out, the age of the most used trio is a worry, so too is contract expiration for all of Keita, James Milner and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

With those three likely on the way out, and the other three heading into their thirties, this needs to be addressed.

The club obviously realise this and are working on targets – chiefly the mercurial Jude Bellingham. But the 19-year-old himself won’t be enough. Big decisions on the horizon for the recruitment team.
