An unbelievable footballer’: Merson ranks only Kevin De Bruyne higher than Liverpool’s ‘class act

Paul Merson ranks his Premier League midfielders this week, including both Kevin De Bruyne and Liverpool’s Thiago. The Spaniard is earning the plaudits.

Any list of the Premier League’s five best midfielders will cause conflict. Is there really any doubt over the top two, though?

Paul Merson gave things a go for SportsKeeda this week and put Kevin De Bruyne at the top of the pile. He sees Manchester City’s star as the best player on the planet right now – something I’d go along with.

But Merson was sure to hail his no.2 choice, too – Thiago. The Liverpool midfielder is someone who dominates his team, says Merson.

“Thiago Alcantara is an unbelievable footballer, he’s a class act,” says Merson. “When he doesn’t play, Liverpool are a completely and utterly different team and we’ve seen that a handful of times already this season.

“When he first joined, there was a lot of talk that he slowed Liverpool down a little, but after he adapted to the pace of the Premier League, there’s been no stopping him!”

Kevin De Bruyne and Thiago

De Bruyne and Thiago are the two standout midfielders for the Premier League’s two standout sides. They’re the pair that run things at their best, even if they do it in slightly different ways.

Honestly, it’s just great to see Thiago finally getting all the praise he deserves. Some of the criticism he faced over his first year or two was ridiculous. There was talk that he wouldn’t be able to adapt, played too slowly, or that he was the opposite of what Liverpool needed.Manchester City v Liverpool - The FA Community Shield

As it turns out, he’s one of the absolute best midfielders on the planet. He might be the outright best passer that the game has to offer right now – certainly from a deeper position.

So while De Bruyne probably is as good as it gets in midfield, Thiago really isn’t too far behind. Liverpool have a truly sensational player in their ranks. And one that we hope to God stays fit.
