‘A selfish point of view’: Pundit is ‘delighted’ after what happened to three Liverpool players this week

Three Liverpool players were dropped for the internationals this week. John Aldridge thinks it’s something to be delighted about.

It’s been a strange international break for Liverpool players. Certain stars – vital players for the team – suffered blow, with their bosses leaving them out.

Thiago, for instance, wasn’t called up by Spain and there’s a sense that he might not go to the World Cup. Fabinho doesn’t appear to really be in the plans with Brazil, either. Trent Alexander-Arnold certainly isn’t in England’s as he was left out to face Germany.

Seeing Reds’ reputations suffer isn’t nice, of course, and you’d like to think that everyone can see their talents. After all, the trio have been sensational over the last 12 months and played enormous roles in Liverpool’s success last season.

John Aldridge, though, admits that ‘selfishly’, he can’t help but enjoy the players being left out.

“From a selfish point of view, I’m delighted Trent is being kept fresh for our games,” he wrote for the Liverpool Echo. “The same applies for the likes of Thiago at Spain and Fabinho for Brazil.

We agree with Aldridge and Liverpool may quietly celebrate Alexander-Arnold being left out. The right-back looks like he might miss the World Cup – and that could prove key as the Reds chase trophies in 2023.Brazil v Ghana - International Friendly

After all, Mohamed Salah, Luis Diaz, Andy Robertson and Joel Matip will all get a month’s break at the end of the year. They certainly won’t be in Qatar.

Alexander-Arnold also being on that list would undoubtedly be a win for Liverpool. Let alone if Thiago and Fabinho remain on Merseyside, too. That would be the bulk of the Reds’ team getting a mid-season break as most stars don’t.

We do still expect all three to go to the World Cup. There’s a real chance, though, that Liverpool come out on top this winter.
