$43m star responds to Liverpool transfer links as Jürgen Klopp told to seal Naby Keïta swap

Media Digest: Liverpool boss Jürgen Klopp has been told to use Naby Keïta as part of a transfer swap deal while a $43m midfielder has responded to links with the Reds.

Naby Keïta suggestion

Liverpool has been told to use the soon-to-be out-of-contract Naby Keïta as a makeweight for the signing of Jude Bellingham, with the Borussia Dortmund midfielder the player that Jürgen Klopp wants to transform his Reds side.

It is going to take more than one player to fix the Reds, of course, but the midfield is where the problems stem from, and where several changes are likely to be made in the summer.

As well as Keïta, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and James Milner are also out of contract at the end of the season and there are doubts over whether any of the trio will remain at the club into next season.

Don Hutchison, speaking to ESPN, has suggested that Keïta could be used as part of a swap deal to secure Bellingham this month.

“You have to make sure you don’t just panic,” he said. “Speaking to Bellingham’s mum and dad. Speaking to Dortmund. Speaking to the player. Trying to be cute and offer maybe Keïta to Dortmund, or whatever you see fit.

“But they have got to make sure that they don’t just panic.”

Teun Koopmeiners latest

Liverpool has scouted Atalanta midfielder Teun Koopmeiners ‘several times’ this season, according to Fabrizio Romano, writing for Caught Offside, with Football Italia reporting that the Italian side would want ‘at least’ $43m (£35m/€40m) for the player.

The 24-year-old attacking midfielder is a talent and is in the right age category for Liverpool to target to rejuvenate their midfield area, but the Serie A side are in no rush to sell.

“Honestly, Atalanta has never received any approaches for Teun Koopmeiners in January. It’s a quiet situation and I don’t see them selling another midfielder after Ruslan Malinovskyi to Marseille,” Romano wrote.

Ahead of facing Bologna yesterday — a game in which Koopmeiners scored the equalising goal in a 2-1 win for his team — the Dutchman responded to claims that Liverpool were interested in signing him.

“I’m playing for Atalanta, I’m very happy here and I’m just thinking about that,” he said, via Tuttomercato.
